Su He, male, Mongolian, born in January 1947, party member, former chairman of the Political Consultative Conference of Alashan League, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. In 2004, he retired two years early and returned to his hometown Ejina Banner to plant trees. As a retired cadre at the departmental level, he and his wife have been planting trees in the desert for more than ten years, planting more than 3,000 mu of Haloxylon ammodendron trees and building an oasis in the long sand sea.
Su He has won the honorary titles of "model of the times", advanced individual of national retired cadres and moral model of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
People’s Daily has reported the advanced deeds of Su He and the old man many times, and published the touching story of Su He and the old man on the front page of April 30, 2014.

A dark face with wrinkles like a knife, a messy but stubborn head like snow-white hair, and a pair of rough big hands full of scars … No one would have expected to see Su He in the boundless desert of Ejina Banner, Alashan League, Inner Mongolia. This ancient old man with a spade, simple clothes and a kind face is a retired veteran cadre at the main hall level. In the past 10 years, Sue, the old man and his wife have settled down and planted trees in the deserted desert, turning the barren land that used to be full of yellow sand into a Haloxylon ammodendron forest that can’t be seen at all.
In April, Suhe ushered in the most important season of the year-planting new seedlings of Haloxylon ammodendron, watering Haloxylon ammodendron planted in the previous two years, and preparing seedlings for next year’s planting … The old man was as busy as a bee, and the interview was carried out in the labor.
After laying several long irrigation pipes and closing the switch, the pump began to make a low sound. After a while, the water seemed to be alive and jumped into the distance in the water pipe. Watching the gurgling spring rush out of the nozzle with joy, nourishing the thirsty Haloxylon ammodendron seedlings in the rolling yellow sand, Su and the old man showed a sunny smile and finally had time to talk to reporters. "The most difficult thing to plant trees in the desert is water."
Ten years ago, Su He began to plant Haloxylon ammodendron by pulling water with a water cart to green the desert. In the past 10 years, in order to plant Haloxylon ammodendron, Su He has drilled 8 wells in the desert for irrigation, and the Haloxylon ammodendron forest planted by him and his wife has also expanded a little bit, reaching 3,000 mu, becoming one of the largest artificial Haloxylon ammodendron forests in Alashan League.
3000 mu of Haloxylon ammodendron forest, daily maintenance takes great energy. In the spring and autumn, there are two winds in three days, and when you go out, your nose and mouth collar are filled with dust; In Xia Dong, the temperature in the desert is either extremely hot or extremely cold. But the old couple are used to it.
In recent years, the water problem has eased, but other problems have followed, with frequent visits by livestock and stealing by mice. In addition to watering, Su He has to patrol and kill rats every day. He insists on patrolling every day, rain or shine. In the desert, Su and the moving back and the swaying shadows play a touching green symphony.

■ "Black City cannot disappear in the hands of our generation"
The car drove out of the town of Ejina Banner and headed for Black City along the path, 40 kilometers away. The window was full of desolate sand dunes, and there was no family. When I came near, a lonely little bungalow suddenly flashed out of the shawo. This is the home where Su He lived with his wife Delig for 10 years. The door was unlocked, and a few extremely simple pieces of furniture showed the simplicity of the old couple’s life. Seeing Su He in the boundless desert, no one can think of it. In front of him, this old man with a spade, simple clothes and a kind face is a retired veteran cadre at the main hall level.
In 2004, 57-year-old Su He took the initiative to apply to the organization, resigned as the chairman of the Alashan League CPPCC, returned to his hometown Ejina Banner 700 kilometers away from Alashan Zuoqi, where the League Committee was located, planted trees next to the site of the Black City in the desert, took out his savings for many years, built three bungalows at the foot of the Black City, and took root in the desert.
In April, Suhe ushered in the most important season of the year-planting new seedlings of Haloxylon ammodendron, watering Haloxylon ammodendron planted in the previous two years, and preparing seedlings for next year’s planting … All the work should be completed in just over a month. The old man was as busy as a bee, and the interview was carried out in labor.
After laying several long irrigation pipes and closing the switch, the pump began to make a low sound. After a while, the water came, and the flat water pipe was immediately bulging, and the water seemed to be alive in the water pipe. Watching the gurgling spring rush out of the nozzle with joy, nourishing the thirsty Haloxylon ammodendron seedlings in the rolling yellow sand, Su and the old man showed a sunny smile. "The most difficult thing to plant trees in the desert is water. Natural conditions are not good, people can overcome them, but without water, the seedlings planted can’t live. "
The site of Heicheng, where Su He chose to plant trees, is an ancient city of Xixia with a history of nearly a thousand years, with serious desertification. He recalled that a few decades ago, there were dense forests and grass around here, and Populus euphratica and Salix were so dense that camels couldn’t find them. But after the 1950s and 1960s, the ecology deteriorated, large areas of vegetation died, and there were more and more sandstorms. Ejina Banner even became the source of sandstorms. "The sand blown by the wind around the Black City is piled as high as the wall, and it will be buried. I had an idea at that time that the Black City could not disappear in the hands of our generation. " Su He said.
Ten years ago, in order to prevent camels from eating plant seedlings, Su He fenced 23,000 mu of desert and began to plant Haloxylon ammodendron with water trucks to green the desert. In the past 10 years, Su He has drilled 8 wells in the desert for irrigation, and the Haloxylon ammodendron planted by him and his wife has also expanded a little, reaching 3,000 mu. Ten years later, two Populus euphratica trees planted at the back of the house grew into big trees, but people were tired and bent. The old man’s determined face, honed by the sun and wind and sand, has been engraved with wrinkles, and the calluses on his big hands, full of scars, have faded layer after layer. After years of efforts and experiments, Su He summed up a set of effective drought-resistant planting techniques, with Haloxylon ammodendron with strong drought resistance as the main planting tree species to expand the vegetation area. The Haloxylon ammodendron forest he planted has become one of the largest artificial Haloxylon ammodendron forests in Alashan League.

■ He can make herders voluntarily join the planting team.
In Ejina Banner, when it comes to Suhe, the surrounding farmers and herdsmen will give their thumbs up and sincerely praise them.
"Su Lao once served as the flag commander and secretary of our Ejina Banner, but no matter who deals with him, he feels like an ordinary herder." Mandugeli, a herdsman in Jirigelangtugacha, planted Haloxylon ammodendron under the drive of Su He. She concluded that the reason why she volunteered to do greening in the desert was on the one hand the example strength of Su He, but more importantly, Su He’s "many ways". He can get herders to join the planting team voluntarily.
"There are three deserts in Alashan League: Wulanbuhe, Badain Jaran and Tengger. desert control is like a foolish man moving mountains by one person, but if everyone can participate, the situation will be different." Su He said.
At first, Su and Haloxylon ammodendron were short of manpower, so they hired surrounding herders to help. Seedling raising, planting, management and protection, pest control, rodent control, rabbit prevention … He taught his years of groping experience to other herders without reservation. Herdsmen earned extra income by working for Su He, and also learned the technique of planting Haloxylon ammodendron. "In the second year, Su Lao gave us some Haloxylon ammodendron seedlings and asked us to go back and plant them around our house to make the environment in front of the door better. Our Haloxylon ammodendron was planted alive, and Su Lao found us cistanche seeds to plant in the roots of Haloxylon ammodendron. Cistanche deserticola is a valuable Chinese herbal medicine. After growing up, herders have more income. With economic benefits, more and more herders are willing to plant Haloxylon ammodendron in the desert, and the ecology has improved little by little. " Mandu Gerile said that more than 2,000 mu of Haloxylon ammodendron forest has been planted in Jiri Grandugacha alone.
At present, in Ejina Banner, about 300 herders began to plant Haloxylon ammodendron under the drive of Su He. "Sue and like a Haloxylon ammodendron stubbornly survived in the desert. The Haloxylon ammodendron seeds he laid took root and sprouted around and grew into pieces of Haloxylon ammodendron forest. Dunes no longer flow as freely as they used to. " Gong Diancheng, who followed Su He for many years, told reporters.
Every plant is his child.
■ It takes much more effort to ensure the survival rate than to plant it.
Under the scorching sun, Su He dug up the failed Haloxylon ammodendron from the sand with a spade. When replanting new seedlings, he always kneels on the ground and carefully cultivates the sand with his hands, and then pulls the hose to water it. "This was planted last year, and more than half of it survived this year, but the water is still a little behind. If water can be watered twice a year in the first three years, the survival rate will be greatly improved. After three years, the depth of rooting is almost the same, and it can be’ weaned’. "
For each next tree seedling, Su Hui will carefully wrap the trunk with old clothes. "Wrapping clothes is afraid of rabbits and mice. In recent years, the ecology has improved. There are more rabbits in the desert and rats are also rampant." When planting a seedling, Su He rubbed the trunk with rough hands, as if expressing his love for the child. "Every tree is alive. Like my child, I always hope it will thrive. It is easy to plant a plant in the desert, and the most difficult thing is post-maintenance. It takes much more effort to ensure the survival rate than planting it. "
3000 mu of Haloxylon ammodendron forest, daily maintenance takes great energy. In spring in the desert, there are two winds in three days. When you go out, your nose and mouth collar will be filled with dust. In summer, the temperature in the desert is as high as 40 degrees Celsius. The old couple often work in the scorching sun, but Su He is used to it.
In recent years, the problem of water has been solved, but other problems have followed. The desert is deserted, livestock smelling green frequently patronize it, and rats also nest here, constantly stealing and gnawing the newly-grown Haloxylon ammodendron trees. In addition to watering, Su He has to patrol and kill rats every day. This is a very difficult thing for young people, but Su He did it. He insisted on patrolling every day, rain or shine.
Nowadays, the elderly who are nearly seventy years old are also beginning to think about the way out for Haloxylon ammodendron when they can’t move. "Give it to a responsible unit or person." Su He has only one idea.
"But at present, my father’s ideas are still many! He wants to dig wells, expand the area of Haloxylon ammodendron, raise more Haloxylon ammodendron seedlings, and drive more people to plant Haloxylon ammodendron in the desert … My whole family will come here to help him when we have a holiday. As long as it is about planting trees, we have to listen to him. " Su He’s son Hu Qing told reporters.
Last year, seeing that Su He was getting tired, Delig bought a milk sheep to supplement Su He’s nutrition. "These 10 years came unconsciously. He wants to make some contribution to his hometown, and our family’s idea is to let him take good care of his body and work for a few more years … "said Delig.
Let Life Bloom Green (Short Comment)
Retired, a diligent old cow took off the noose of pulling the cart, but did not choose to rest. After retirement, Su He could have lived in peace and contentment, but he chose to settle in the desert with the worst ecological environment, only adding a piece of green to his hometown.
In the sandstorm, a white-haired old man smiled and worked and lived for 10 years. While overcoming fatigue, he also endured the unbearable loneliness of ordinary people. In the past 10 years, he challenged the deteriorating environment with practical actions, but the sandstorm failed to swallow his strong figure. Su He’s touching story of sticking to the sand control and tree planting in Black City is widely celebrated in Alashan. Driven and inspired by it, enterprises and individuals who are committed to changing their hometown have taken action, and the ecological environment in Ejina Banner is gradually changing.
An old horse crouches, aiming at a thousand miles. Su He and the old man, who are nearly old, are still sticking to their ideals with their beliefs and writing praises with their lives. He often said, "I am a Communist party member. If I plant more trees in my lifetime, I can leave a good environment for the descendants of Ejina." As a Communist party member who will never retire, Su He always keeps in mind his mission, always keeps his true qualities as a public servant, practices the Party’s mass line with practical actions, and becomes a model for young people to learn. His figure is like Hu Yangshu in Ejina Banner for thousands of years, persistent, tenacious, indomitable, and never give up …
